Booking System Security Measures
This document outlines the security measures implemented in the Hands of Brama booking system to protect against common web vulnerabilities.
Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Protection
The booking system implements several layers of protection against XSS attacks:
-
Input Sanitization:
- All user inputs are sanitized using the
sanitizeInput() function that escapes HTML special characters.
- This prevents attackers from injecting malicious scripts through form fields.
-
Output Encoding:
- All dynamic content displayed on the page is properly encoded using the
sanitizeOutput() function.
- This ensures that any potentially dangerous characters are rendered as text, not executable code.
-
Data Attribute Validation:
- All data attributes used for service information are validated against strict patterns.
- The
validateDataAttribute() function ensures that only expected data formats are processed.
-
Content Security Policy:
- A strict CSP is implemented to restrict the sources of executable content.
- This provides an additional layer of protection against XSS attacks.
-
Client-side Validation:
- Input fields have appropriate
pattern attributes to restrict input formats.
- Maximum lengths are enforced with
maxlength attributes.
- Required fields are marked with the
required attribute.
-
Date and Time Validation:
- Date inputs are validated for proper format and range.
- Time selections are checked against valid time formats.
Data Structure Validation
-
Service Data Validation:
- The
validateServiceData() function ensures that service information follows expected patterns.
- This prevents potential injection attacks through service data.
-
Price and Duration Validation:
- Numeric values like prices and durations are validated to ensure they contain only digits.
- This prevents potential injection or overflow attacks.
Additional Security Measures
-
Static Site Architecture:
- As a static site, the application has no direct database connection, reducing attack surface.
- Form submissions are handled through email or WhatsApp, not stored on the server.
-
Limited JavaScript:
- JavaScript functionality is limited to essential features.
- No eval() or other potentially dangerous functions are used.
Security Considerations for Future Updates
-
Server-side Validation:
- If server-side processing is added in the future, implement equivalent validation on the server.
-
Rate Limiting:
- Consider implementing rate limiting if the booking system experiences abuse.
-
Regular Security Audits:
- Periodically review the code for security vulnerabilities.
- Keep dependencies updated to patch known security issues.
